Designing with community in mind

When asked 'what does community mean to you?' our team responded with answers such as 'a sense of belonging', 'your village', 'friends, family, and loved ones supporting one another' and 'a place where you can feel safe.'

It's evident that community begins at home. It's about the people you surround yourself with and share your time with. And that’s why we’re so passionate about people-centred design. We create inspiring interiors that work for those living within it and the communities around them.

When designing for BTR this can span a hugely diverse range of uses, from single and multi-family homes to apartments and communal spaces. With every project, the end goal mustn’t be diluted, and that’s creating spaces for people.

We also consider the local area and its history to fuel the inspiration behind our design scheme. This allows us to create a tailored and personal design for the development.

So, here are our top 5 focuses when we design with community in mind:

1. The local area

When considering the local area, we delve into its unique characteristics and historical significance. Understanding the neighbourhood’s culture, architectural heritage, and social dynamics is pivotal. By immersing ourselves in the essence of the locale, we can infuse our designs with elements that resonate with residents, fostering a sense of belonging and identity. Incorporating local materials, architectural motifs, and cultural symbols pays homage to the community's heritage and establishes a connection between residents and their surroundings.

2. Communal/multipurpose areas

Communal spaces are the heart of any development, fostering interaction, collaboration, and a sense of unity among residents. From vibrant co-working spaces and landscaped gardens to cosy lounges and shared kitchens, these spaces are meticulously crafted to accommodate diverse activities and social gatherings. By promoting inclusivity and engagement, these multipurpose areas become catalysts for community-building, encouraging residents to forge meaningful connections and create lasting memories.

3. Diverse demographics

A thriving community embraces diversity and celebrates individuality. Our design approach recognises the importance of catering to various demographics, including families, young professionals, and seniors. By offering a range of housing options and amenities that cater to varying needs and lifestyles, we foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and represented. Through thoughtful planning and adaptable design features, we ensure that our developments evolve with the community's changing needs, remaining relevant and accessible to all.

4. Sustainability

As stewards of the built environment, we prioritise sustainability where possible in our design process. From eco-friendly materials to green spaces and urban agriculture initiatives, we aim to minimise environmental impact while enhancing quality of life. By integrating sustainable practices into our designs, we reduce the carbon footprint and promote resilience, health, and well-being within the community. Through ongoing engagement and education, we empower our clients and their residents to embrace sustainable living practices, creating a greener, more vibrant future for future generations.

5. Style

Style is more than just aesthetics; it reflects identity, culture, and aspiration. In our design philosophy, we strive to strike a balance between timeless elegance and contemporary flair, creating spaces that resonate with residents on a personal level. We truly care about the spaces we create, focusing on how they function and how they make people feel. By staying attuned to evolving design trends and lifestyle preferences, we ensure that our developments remain vibrant, relevant, and coveted destinations within the community.

Our Director of Housing and BTR, Craig Osborne, said: “In our journey to reintroduce design to the community, we recognise the power of narrative. By intertwining the past, present, and future of the neighborhoods we work in, our interiors become more than just spaces—they become storytellers.

"Through purposeful design, we aim to craft environments that not only reflect the essence of the community but also empower residents to reclaim their sense of place and identity."
